C.R.A.S.H. - A study on recursive sampling, microtones & microrhythms conducted August to November of 2023.

FINAL VERSION.
What you hear is what you get, unless I can remaster it faithfully later.

I've talked a lot lately about the idea of releasing albums in alpha/beta format but those experiments will take place separately.
Assume this album will not change after you purchase it.

Subwoofers or headphones recommended.

Every attempt I made at mixing this album ultimately resulted in creative changes that were frankly too significant to even call it the same album, and it feels genuinely messed up to have it eventually replace this one. There's no good system for managing that, so... my plan is to continue my weird little journey with these songs in a separate project.

cRASH 1 is essentially a relic of the final moments before I embarked on a much broader objective with this material, and I think it deserves to exist steadfastly in that context.

I thought about adding some subtle delay to the mix occasionally to see if it brought any fun "Sleepline" energy out of the album or made the mix feel less stale, so I might try implementing that, but that's the most I'm even considering doing from this point on. I'll keep the originals around as bonus tracks either way, but yeah, any changes beyond that will be a separate project.

So, why am I talking about updating albums & releasing stuff in beta? Weeeell... I am... way too compulsive about my work, and I gotta intervene.

I'm fascinated by the idea of letting the listener follow me along that journey directly; the idea of an album that grows alongside you. I think it'd be deeply rehabilitative for me getting music out there in general, especially if I can set up a system for preserving a comprehensive document of any changes I make along the way & make that easily accessible to people who bought it. I have platform-level ideas for it. Anyway, more info soon. Follow @Vektroid on Twitter and Bsky for the most updates, and maybe get on the mailing list too in case I do a big newsletter thing.

Btw, for clarity's sake:
This album was created without the use of AI. AI art was considered at various points for visuals, but ultimately rejected on grounds that it really just didn't feel justified or narratively necessary.

All audio was manipulated entirely by hand in a multi-step recursion process in which approx. 5000 slices are applied procedurally to a sample (whilst building "eccojam" style loops & shifting the playhead marker forward slowly thru the duration of sample, duplicating the previous loop each time), at which point all 5000 slices are consolidated into one single sample, and the process is repeated as many times as you want, creating progressively more bizarre, unique & profound new sounds.

Eventually you reach a point where you are no longer deconstructing a sample, but rather, you are starting a new process of constructing it into something totally different. These phase shifts (paradigm shifts?) tend to happen without you consciously realizing it at first, and I can't help but feel like it bears some similarity to how a GAN turns images into mulch. This release essentially marks my first major milestone in said "reconstructive process".

As result of the sheer nature of this process (+ DAW limitations in general), it's honestly near-impossible to calculate the true number of total slices across this album. My gut was estimating somewhere between 100K-1M but for all I know it could be monumentally different in either direction. I haven't yet figured out a good system for keeping track yet. It would probably require a different DAW capable of something more readily reversible than the Ableton "consolidate" feature, i.e. something more like "smart objects" in Photoshop or "nested sequences" in Premiere.

Anyway... Hmm. Is there an existing name for this type of music?
I'd like to propose "crash music" if not, though I can't help but wonder if this is technically musique concrete?

Thanks for reading.
See you again soon.

Dedicated to Morgan, the light of my life. You are my rock. No one in the world has ever made me feel safer than you do. I cannot thank you enough for everything you've done to help me heal & grow stronger. You've already changed my life forever. Nothing I could say here would adequately depict the magnitude of the good you've done for me. Love you with all of my heart. Forever, after & beyond. Get home soon Bunbun. Let's flip the fucking world on its head. xoxo

To my Patreon supporters, my Twitch chat, my Discord community & all the amazing new friends I've made since I began streaming:
You literally saved my life. More times than I can count at this point. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being the single greatest community I've ever in my life had the privilege to be a part of. The good internet will always live on, somewhere, somehow. You might just have to go looking deeper for it.

To Robin:
"Bring plenty of cash".

I just want to say that most of the work you all know me for would not exist were it not for the brilliant & utterly revolutionary work (and more importantly, friendship & guidance) of the one and only INTERNET CLUB.

To Jeff & the entire Giant Bomb community:
I could type for hours about the incredible things you've all taught me, shown me, the advice you've given me & the patience you've demonstrated toward me as a person on the outer fringes of your subculture, but I think what really matters is that I say: you guys genuinely reminded me who I am. After a really long period of being surrounded primarily by artists who frankly tried to bully the nerd out of me, you guys singlehandedly helped me re-establish that connection I'd lost with myself & the shit I really cared about. I really just cannot wait for the day when I get to go "Osamu Sato style". You're a damn good dad to those kids, Jeff. Godspeed.

To Laura:
I will never, ever forget the day you intervened when I needed help more than ever. You are the reason I was able to rebuild, and you're also the reason I gained the courage to start releasing music again in the first place. You deserve the world from this business. Can't wait to revisit & finish that remix already.

To Marco:
For your wisdom, guidance, patience & understanding. Thank you for helping me parse this ridiculous world we now live in. You've done so much to help me find a sense of reason & purpose with what I do. I'm so excited to see where the next chapter goes.

To Belle:
Back in 2011 not many of my friends were authentic, and you were always one of the only ones who really saw through it & cared about resisting it. Thank you for everything you've done to be that compass for myself and others in our community. I'm so excited for the path you're headed down these days. You're evolving so quickly these days. Thank you so much for all the early morning get-togethers back when I was freaking the fuck out about my sleep schedule falling apart.

To SCJ:
Never let them make you feel alienated. Ever. Let's just build a new scene at that point. Fuck that. Love ya dude. People are going to shit themselves when they hear our collab project.

To everybody from PISS TEAM:
Greets to the motherfucking scene. I don't know how you put up with me sometimes. You guys truly amaze me every day. It's been one of the most humbling, important, amazing experiences of my life getting to know you all; I've never felt like I had a team I could trust, and that changed when I started meeting you guys. Here's to me getting healthy & learning how to pay that love forward better than I've managed over the years. You guys give me a lot of reasons to do that. I can't wait to finally do some work together.

There's so much. Uhh

Thank you to my therapist(s?) & all the medical staff that has been working with me these past months. You are actually some of the coolest people I've ever met. I wish you guys could just be stream guests. I've never met a practitioner that understood the effects of digital life on mental health the way you do. I'm so excited about your futures in this field. You're going to do some really incredible work out there, I know it.

And thank you to Aguirre Records, for being the most diligent, patient & understanding people I've ever had the privilege of working with in this business. You genuinely taught me to be a better artist in more ways than one & I cannot thank you enough for going so far out of your way to give me the space to do so. We're like... actually doing a Vektroid album without brickwalling! Actually kind of surreal. Those two records are going to be absolute classics thanks to you guys. Cannot thank you enough for giving me the time to train myself on all these new skills. I think we're reaching a tipping point here.

There are so many people I had to leave off, I cannot even begin to count it. If I keep thanking people here then somebody's gonna wind up feeling super left out, so let me just say that I see you, and I want to see you empowered and treated with nothing but respect by the people around you. If that isn't happening, I hope we can all work together to change that.

You matter.

Yes, you.

Thank you Autechre.
